ACI Statement on Internet-Fueled Laundry Packet Challenges

01/12/2018

ACI Laundry Pod PosterWashington, D.C. – January 12, 2018 – The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) issued the following statement in response to a disturbing trend on the Internet that, through blog posts, "memes," and videos, irresponsibly encourages people to eat or bite into liquid laundry packets:

"Liquid laundry packets are only for use in the washing machine to clean clothes. Millions of consumers use these products properly and safely every day.

"It is important to remember that these products are highly concentrated detergent packets. Their contents can cause serious harm if they are ingested or come into contact with the eyes or skin.

"They are not a toy and should not be used in pranks. Product safety is not a joke.

"Of particular concern is the potential for younger children to mimic this behavior. Responsible use and storage of cleaning products are important.

"Laundry packets – like any other household product – should be used as directed."

ACI – Continued focus on safe use and storage

"In all households, it is critical to keep liquid laundry packets – and all household cleaning products – out of sight and reach of young children, as well as locked away in homes where there may be adults living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

"ACI launched PACKETS UP!, a consumer education initiative as part of industry’s ongoing effort to help reduce the number of accidents related to liquid laundry packets. As part of its PACKETS UP! program, ACI launched an educational microsite, PACKETSUP.com, which offers resources to encourage safe laundry room practices."
