Established in 1926, ACI is dedicated to advancing public understanding of the safety and benefits of cleaning products, and protecting the ability of its members to formulate products that best meet consumer needs. ACI serves both its members and the public by developing and sharing information about industry products with the technical community, policy makers, childcare and health professionals, educators, media and consumers.
A 25-member Board of Directors consisting of elected representatives from member companies, both large and small, sets policy for the Association. Various committees, subcommittees, task forces and working groups carry out programs.
ACI programs address a variety of human health and environmental safety issues from several perspectives.
Foundation of Science
A foundation in science is at the core of ACI’s activity and engagement. We strive to prioritize technical programs that can assist in providing a scientifically sound foundation for public, legislative and regulatory judgments about products and ingredients.
Year-round, ACI co-authors and otherwise supports research presented in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conferences that expands our knowledge on the safety and effectiveness of products and ingredients and how they interact with a variety of environments. These efforts help ACI continually improve the practices and information used by cleaning product manufacturers to ensure the safety of their products.
Our goal is to contribute to a wealth of publicly available knowledge and expertise around cleaning products. Our science database, which includes decades of ACI published research, and our assessment tools are made available to the public to underscore our continued commitment to product stewardship and transparency.
Education and Outreach
Cleaning products play an essential role in our daily lives. By safely and effectively removing soils, germs and other contaminants, they help us to stay healthy, care for our homes, workplaces and possessions, improve our quality of life and provide overall better living.
ACI partners with public and private groups – including family and consumer science educators, health and safety professionals, medical experts, government agencies and charitable organizations, to name just a few – to educate individuals, families and communities about the positive contributions that cleaning products make to better and healthier living.
Commitment to Sustainability
Enhancing health and well-being is the cornerstone of the cleaning products industry. As an industry, we want to provide cleaning products to society without creating unnecessary impacts to human health and the environment. Meeting this goal requires the industry to ensure the safety of our products for society and the environment through the value chain — from sourcing of raw materials through product production, use and disposal – and striving to lower our impact on our planet as a whole.
ACI’s mission in sustainability is to enable our membership to drive improvements in sustainability across our industry and throughout our supply chain. We are committed to providing our industry with the tools and guidance it needs to make steps toward meaningful progress and to playing a role in bringing our together leading actions that can create bolder collective action across our industry.
